In the meantime, we’d like to provide some tips for handling common dental emergencies until you can see our dentist.
Relieve Tooth Pain
A toothache is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. You may have only a slight tingly sensation, or you might have severe pain that prevents you from functioning. Try taking an OTC pain medication like ibuprofen, using a cold compress, or swishing saltwater in your mouth.
Control Jaw Pain or Swelling
It’s crucial to promptly deal with jaw pain or swelling as they indicate an infected or abscessed tooth. If an abscess or infection isn’t addressed promptly, there can be consequences, including life-threatening complications.
Repair Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Teeth
Any of the above issues need to be treated promptly to prevent further damage to the tooth. If there’s pain or swelling, try ibuprofen, a saltwater rinse, or a cold compress.
Bring any of the chipped or broken pieces with you to your appointment.
Replace Lost Dental Crown or Tooth Filling
If you lose a crown, keep it safe and bring it to your emergency dental appointment. Our dentist may be able to place it back on your tooth; unfortunately, we can't replace lost fillings, and we will need to place a new one.
Dental Trauma Treatment, Including Knocked-Out Tooth
Dental trauma such as a knocked-out tooth is an emergency that requires immediate treatment. We have only about two hours from the time of injury during which we might be able to save the tooth.
Handle the tooth by the crown only. Rinse it in warm water if it's dirty but don’t touch the root or any attached tissue. You must keep the tooth moist, so try to place it back in the socket gently; if this isn't possible, place it inside your cheek pocket or in a container of milk or saliva. Bring the tooth with you to your appointment.
If your dental trauma includes a facial or jaw injury, or you are bleeding excessively, please go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.
