Our role is to help our patients keep their teeth healthy for a lifetime. Of course, life doesn’t always go exactly to plan, and sometimes a tooth extraction is necessary to protect your overall oral health.
A Judgment-Free Dental Office
Dr. Cory McMahan will focus on prevention and services like dental exams and teeth cleanings to support excellent oral health. However, we also understand that life happens, dental appointments get missed, and you might wake up with a toothache one day.
Rest assured, we are a completely judgment-free dental office. It’s not our place to lecture or judge you but to provide the quality dental treatment you need.
Reasons for Tooth Extraction
If you have a decayed or damaged tooth, we’ll do everything we can to save it. Some reasons for tooth extraction are:
- Tooth decay is so extensive that a filling or crown won’t help
- A tooth infection is too far advanced to be treated with a root canal
- Advanced gum disease has caused certain teeth to loosen
- Wisdom teeth are crowding other teeth
- Dental trauma has broken a tooth off below the gumline
Our dentist may also recommend removing a tooth to plan for dentures or dental implant placement or for children when planning orthodontic treatment.
Your Comfort Is Our Priority
Nobody wants to hear that they need a tooth extraction, and we understand. We do everything we can to ensure that you are comfortable and that your procedure is as efficient as possible.
Dr. McMahan is experienced at performing gentle tooth extractions, so you know you are in good hands. They use potent local anesthetics to numb your tooth, so you don’t feel anything except some slight pressure.
We also offer nitrous oxide or laughing gas to keep you calm and relaxed during your procedure. Nitrous provides all the comfort you need during your procedure but has no lingering side effects so that you can drive yourself home safely.
Caring for Yourself after Tooth Extraction
After your tooth extraction, we will send you home with after-care instructions. Please be sure to follow them closely as they will help speed healing and avoid complications.
You should hold the provided gauze in place for about an hour after your procedure, then replace it. Plan on a diet of soft foods for the first day or two, and don’t smoke or drink through a straw that risks disturbing the protective clot that’s forming over the extraction site.
Take over-the-counter pain medications or those prescribed by your dentist, which should be enough to keep you comfortable through the healing process.
As always, if you have any questions or experience anything out of the ordinary, call Harbor Point Family Dentistry so that we can help you.
